Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff began the night with a Cha Cha -- Paso Doble combo to impress the judges with scores of 9 across the table.

Throw in their 6 points from the marathon and the pair ended the night with a final combined score of 33.

Emmett Smith and Cheryl Burke were pretty in pink for their Rumba -- Samba. Smith's loose hips and elegant lines had the judges cheering along with Emmett's wife. Emmett edged out Apolo for a score of 27.5 after an 8.5 from Carrie Ann, and two scores of 9.5 from Len and Bruno.

Add 7 from the marathon and Emmitt and Cheryl finished the night with 34.5.

Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy took on a challenging Quick Step -- Samba combo. Although Kirstie and Maks received three 8 scores from the judges, their practice time was spent helping victims of Hurricane Sandy. When people need help, dancing comes second.

Kirstie and Maks finished the night with 24 for their combo and 4 from the marathon for a total of 28.

Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy danced a difficult Foxtrot -- Cha Cha fusion to become the most improved pair of the week. Their focus and hard work paid off with the judges who awarded all 9 scores across the table.

With an added 9 points from the marathon, Kelly and Val ended the night with a total score of 36.

Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani climbed from the bottom of the pack a week earlier to perform a Tango -- Cha Cha. The two put last week's low scores behind them and left it all on the dance floor. Melissa and Tony returned to form this week after receiving a perfect 10 from Carrie Ann and 9.5 from both Len and Bruno.

With 29 for the night and an additional 10 from their marathon victory, Melissa and Tony scored big on the board at 39.

Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough battled injuries this week that forced Derek to sit out during practice sessions for Monday night's performance. Luckily Shawn's season eight partner, Mark Ballas, was available after he and Bristol Palin were eliminated a few weeks ago. Johnson and Ballas hit the ABC dance floor for a Tango -- Paso Doble fusion that became the night's stand-out performance.

Although Shawn and Mark received perfect scores of 10 across the judge's table, their 8 points from the marathon put them one point behind Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovalini on the leaderboard at 38.

Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd danced a Disco themed Argentine Tango -- Samba fusion for the final routine of the evening. As front-runners all season, Gilles and Peta held form to maintain their position at the top of the leaderboard with three 9.5 scores from the judges.

Despite their strong fusion score of 28.5, Gilles and Peta bowed out of the marathon with only 5 points to leave them with a final combined total of 33.5.

Next week, it's another double elimination as the votes carry over.

Shawn Johnson got her Derek Hough back for this week's Viennese Waltz. "His neck is feeling better," said Shawn. Today, Derek posted a note on his blog saying he will have to have surgery, but he'll power through the next three weeks of the show (the finale is Nov. 27). Dressed in a brown military outfit reminiscent of Rolfe from The Sound of Music, Derek twirled Shawn in flowing white, as the two gracefully executed the dance to Sarah McLachlan's Angel. "It was quiet and gentle ... poignant... fabulous," said Len. Bruno called it "heavenly perfection." Carrie Ann liked that Shawn has turned into a "beautiful, rich, in-depth performer." Scores: 10, 9.5, 10 = 29.5 + 38 = 67.5.

For the Trio dance, Shawn and Derek were joined by BFF Mark Ballas for a "tribal" samba. The guys had their shirts off and Shawn wore a sparkly, feathery, bikini-type getup for a funky Lion King -esque number. Len seemed stunned. He shook his head. "There was very little samba content in a very critical week. Shawn, if you go home tomorrow, don't blame me, blame those two." Whaaaa? Bruno said the three of them were "very naughty" and gave him "jungle fever." He said it was "intoxicating" and "creative," but agreed there was "very little" samba. Carrie Ann disagreed with the guys, praising their risk-taking and saying what samba they did was executed well. Derek said they were trying to keep the fans entertained. Scores: 10, 7, 9 = 26. The ballroom was not happy. Total: 93.5

Len praised her, saying, "Of all our celebrities, you impress me the most." Bruno said she was "flamboyantly fabulous" and deserves a spot in the finals. Carrie Ann said she "owned" the paso. Gilles Marini, who has been sliding down the leaderboard, was hoping for a "perfect score," he said in rehearsals. To get there, partner Peta Murgatroyd duct-taped him to stand up straight for his quickstep. Did the trick pay off? Their dance to Danger Zone from Top Gun was fast. They wore black jumpsuits and zoomed around the ballroom. Bruno loved it. "Definitely top gun." Carrie Ann said there were "a few little slips in his feet." And the crowd booed. "But it was so good." Len loved it, calling it "thunder and lightning!" Scores: 9.5, 10, 10 = 29.5 + 33.5 = 63.

Gilles and Peta invited Chelsie Hightower to join them for a salsa. In the dance, the fiery females were fighting over Gilles, who loved it -- and so did the audience. Bruno said, "Menage a trois seems to come natural to you." He praised him for "taking care of the ladies," but said he lost timing a bit. Carrie Ann agreed, but she loved how he "took control" of the dance floor. Len liked that he wasn't hiding behind the women. "Well done!" Scores: 9.5, 10, 9.5 = 29. Total: 92

Total: 93.5
